a.    Attributive Adjectives (Niteleyici Sıfatlar) 

Yaygın biçimde kullanılır ve bir isimden önce gelirler.
 

·   Turkey  is a large country.·    Mike  doesn't need much money. “  Tom is an honest and hardworking boy.”

·   He washed the empty cup.Jane bought a black  hat.

Sıfatların çoğunluğu bu şekilde kullanılmasına karşın aşağıdaki sıfatlar bir isim öncesine getirilerek kullanılır. Yüklemsel olarak kullanılmazlar:

former only                    latter              sole       inner             outer                 mere             utter

b.    Predicative Adjectives (Yüklemsel Sıfatlar) 
 

Bağlaç fiillerle (linking verbs) kullanılır. Sadece yüklemsel olarak yaygın olarak kullanılan sıfatlar: 
 

• I feel tired today.

• We are alone in this big city.

• They are alike in many ways

·   the blue sea         ~ the sea is blue

·   the old man          ~ the man is old

·   happy children       ~ the children are happy 
 

c. Adjectives Functioning as Nouns (İsim Olarak Kullanılan Sıfatlar)

Aşağıdaki verilen sıfatların başına “the” getirilir ve çoğul isim olarak kullanılır. Çoğul fiili alırlar.

The poor = the poor people 

aged             elderly           old                weak

blind              evil               poor             wealthy

brave            handicapped   rich               wise

dead             homeless       sick               young

deaf             injured           strong

disabled         living             unemployed

·   The young in our country show respect to the old.

·   The blind are going to give a concert.

·   Nurses are required to look after the sick and wounded, the old and infirm.
 

d. Adjectives after and before nouns with a change of meaning. (İsimden sonra ve önce kulanıldığı zaman anlam değişikliği olan sıfatlar)

Belirli sıfatlar bu gruba dahildir. -able ve -ible ile biten sıfatların bu şekilde kullanıldığı görülür.

·   After the accident the policeman took the names of the people involved.

Kazadan sonra polis ilgisi bulunan insanların isimlerini aldı.

·   I couldn’t understand this involved sentence.

Bu karmaşık cümleyi anlayamadım.

We went through a door opening on the garden.

·   I want to see the people involved/concerned (= the people who have something to do with the matter)

An involved discussion = detailed, complex

A concerned mother = worried, anxious

f. Adjectives with the after profer names (the ile özel isimlerden sonra kullanılan sıfatlar)

·   Süleyman the Magnificent

·   Alexander the Great.

·   Ivan the Terrible.
