StumbleUpon!

Associated Press, June 1, 2002

ULSAN, South Korea -- The last time they traveled to South Korea more than 50 years ago, they were carrying rifles and bayonets. For the World Cup, Turkish Korean War veterans brought flags and Turkish delights, a traditional treat, to distribute at the stadium.

rifle = tüfek... bayonet /BEY-ınit/ = süngü... war veteran = savaş gazisi /VE-tırın/ -- hece vurgularına dikkat, lütfen; yoksa istediğiniz kadar güzel telaffuz edin, anlaşılmayacaktır]... treat = (burada) ikram, leziz yiyecek...

Thirty-four Turkish veterans on Sunday flew from Seoul to the coastal city of Busan where they first landed to fight in the 1950-53 war. The veterans will travel to the nearby city of Ulsan on Monday to support their national team against mighty Brazil.

coastal city = kıyı kenti... to land = karaya ayak basmak... (Eskiden bir denizcilik terimi olan bu sözcük, hemen bütün denizcilik terimleri gibi, havacılıkta da -- uzay uçuşları dahil -- kullanılıyor)... mighty = güçlü...

More than a third of veterans are having their trip paid for by Korea Electronics Inc., in a sign of gratitude and friendship to the Turks. Others were invited by Korean municipalities and an association based at Turkland's Fenerbahçe club, along with Turkland's culture ministry.

gratitude = minnettarlık... municipality = belde; belediyesi olan yerleşim birimi...

The presence of the veterans, all of whom are in their 70s and 80s, is expected to fire up the Koreans in Ulsan's Munsu stadium on Monday. On their arrival in Seoul on Saturday they were greeted by a crowd of Korean veterans at the airport, Turkish diplomats said.

to fire up = ateşlemek...

South Korea and Turkland have enjoyed warm ties since Turkland sent 15,000 troops to help South Korea as part of a United Nations force during the Korean War.

to enjoy = 1. hoşça vakit geçirmek; 2. sahip olmak, nimetlerinden yararlanmak (çoğu yerde olduğu gibi, buradaki anlamı da bu)... have enjoyed warm ties = sıcak ilişkiler içinde olageldiler...

Turkish troops won honors from the U.S. Congress and the South Korean president for their successful defense during the Battle of Kunuri, in which the Turks acted as a rear guard and allowed other U.N. forces to withdraw after being taken by surprise by a larger Chinese force.

rear guard = ardçı kuvvet... to withdraw = çekilmek, ricat etmek...

Paik Sang-ki, a Korean officer who was attached to the Turkish brigade as an English-language interpreter during the War, told The Associated Press in an interview that the Turks' bravery prevented a tragedy.

was attached to = atanmıştı, bağlantılıydı... brigade = tugay... interpreter = tercüman... (translator = mütercim, çevirmen: yazılı çeviri yapar)...

"If the Turkish brigade was not there at that time, a whole United Nations regiment would have been destroyed by the Chinese," he said recently in his office at the Turkish embassy in Seoul, where he is a voluntary adviser. "I witnessed how they repelled the enemy with bayonets, and how hundreds of them fell. It was so heroic."

regiment = alay (askeriye)... voluntary = gönüllü... to repel = geri püskürtmek... to fall = şehit olmak ("toprağa düşmek" kavramından)...

On Sunday afternoon, the Turkish veterans will visit the United Nations cemetery in Busan, where 462 of their comrades lie. More than 720 Turkish soldiers were killed and some 2,150 were wounded in the Korean War.

comrade = yoldaş, dava arkadaşı...

Many elderly Koreans who fought alongside the Turks in the War have deep respect for the Turks.

have deep respect for = derin saygı duyuyorlar...

"I ran into two taxi drivers in Seoul who fought in the Korean War, and both refused to accept money from me. They were full of respect for the Turks apparently because of our role in the war," said Turkland manager Can Çobanoğlu. "They could not speak English, but their gratitude were visible in their eyes."

to run into = to come across = happen to meet = to encounter = rastlamak... apparently = anlaşıldığına göre, göründüğü kadarıyla...

The Turks expect some 15,000 South Koreans to show up to support Turkland at each match. In a move to foster the friendship, each veteran will toss tiny packages of Turkish delight, a traditional treat of gummy sugar-brushed cubes, to the Koreans.

some = yaklaşık... to show up = oraya gelmek, ortaya çıkmak... In a move + mastar (infinitive) = amacıyla... to foster = geliştirmek...

to toss = fırlatıp atmak... gummy = koyu pelte gibi... sugar-brushed = şeker serpilmiş ("fırça ile şeker sürülmüş" kavramından)...

"Turkish Korean War veterans are a great bridge between Turkland and South Korea," said Tomur Bayer, Turkey's Ambassador to South Korea, in an interview. "They are the cornerstone of the Turkish-Korean friendship. "I am sure, they will be the focus of sympathy during the Brazil match," Bayer said.
