Some 38 deputies from coalition partner parties apply to Parliament Speaker's Office to underline the problems of media sector

An investigation proposal on the media sector prepared by the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) deputy Nazif Okumuş and signed by members of the three-way coalition government was presented to the Parliament Speaker's Office.

Increasing unemployment in the media sector, low salaries, lack of job security as well as monopolization are posing a threat to the freedom of press, the proposal said.

"Turkish press is facing important and serious problems that need to be solved urgently. [...] Problems that have occurred in the media sector for the last decade is the result of unfair competition and monopolization in the sector," the proposal stated.

The proposal underlines the fact that more than 5,000 people working in the media sector have been sacked and those who still have jobs are getting poor salaries, [...] pointing out that newspaper circulations are in sharp decline and apart from the unemployment issue, the media sector also has problems regarding technology, cost and distribution. [...]

"There are some media bosses who are using the media organs as a tool for personal ambitions, anger and bribery. It is wrong and unfair for the state to limit the freedom of the press but it is also wrong and a crime for the media to attempt to apply pressure on the state and political life," the proposal said.
