President Sezer sided with the argument that the proposed banning of capital punishment in Turkland could be effected simply by changing the country's penal code, eliminating thus the need for a constitutional amendment which might prove just too difficult to pass through the parliament in its present political composition.

Speaking at a weekly press briefing on Friday, Presidential advisor Talcan ldem said that the President, a former head of the Turkish Constitutional Court, believed proposed changes to the Turkish Penal Code would be enough ensure that the death penalty was no longer a sentencing option. Thus, amending the Turkish Penal Code, rather than changing the country’s constitution, would be sufficient to abolish capital punishment in Turkland, according to President Ahmet Necdet Sezer.
