Do MGK Secretary-General's words on the EU reveal a certain new attitude on the part of the TSK, though he was only disclosing his "personal" views? What is not easy to understand is his suggestion that Turkland conduct a policy "that encompasses Russia and Iran without ignoring the United States." This has caused a certain amount of confusion in minds, and a clarification is called for. attitude = tutum, tavır... to disclose = açıklamak... to encompass = kapsamak, içine almak... to ignore = görmezden gelmek, tınmamak... clarification = açıklığa kavuşturma (make clear)... The views expressed by National Security Council (MGK) Secretary-General Gen. Tuncer Kılınç at a symposium held at the War Academies Command two days ago have created confusion in many a minds. Though Kılınç Pasha emphasized that these were his own personal views, those familiar with the traditions of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) know very well about the General Staff's sensitivity about military figures' "disclosing personal views." Especially when the person that has spoken up is the MGK secretary-general, it becomes all the more difficult to ignore these words by saying: "So what? These are only his personal views." to emphasize = vurgulamak... general staff = genel kurmay... sensitivity = duyarlık, "hassasiyet"... figures = (burada) şahıslar, kişiler... figures' = sözcüğün -in eki almış hali... to speak up = açıkça ve yüksek sesle söylemek... Under the circumstances, although the prime minister said, "This is his personal stance; we do not have any such policy," in a way that indicates that he is taking this view lightly, Gen. Kılınç's words have caused an increasing number of people to ask questions such as, "Is the TSK altering its stance? Is it further toughening up its approach?" stance = tutum, tavır... to alter = değişmek, değiştirmek; değişim geçirmek... to toughen up = sertleştirmek... ["tough" sıfatından -en ekiyle yapılan fiil]... further toughening up = daha da sertleştiriyor... As far as we know, the General Staff is not against the European Union membership. What it wants is that while moving towards the EU, the measures required to ensure the state's and the country's unity and integrity, be taken. as far as we know = bildiğimiz kadarıyla... to ensure = sağlamak, sağlama almak, garantiye almak... unity = birlik, beraberlik... integrity = bütünlük... It wants Turkland not to run and join the EU blindly without securing itself adequately. It wants Turkland not to take too hasty steps. hasty = aceleci, acele... blindly = körlemesine... Some of these sensitivities are extremely justified. However, the view expressed by Gen. Kılınç carries this issue even beyond the EU and encompasses a brand new initiative, the feasibility of which is debatable. justified = haklı... (to justify = haklılığını göstermek, haklı kılmak, fiilinden)... issue = (burada) konu, mesele... brand new = yepyeni... initiative = insiyatif, girişim... feasibility = fizibilite, olabilirlik, geçerlik... debatable = tartışmalı, tartışmaya açık... (to debate, "müzakere etmek" fiilinden) by Mehmet Ali Birant, Turkish Daily News Favori olarak ekle (16) | Bu yazıyı web sayfanızda alıntılayın | Görüntüleme sayısı: 112
