The World Is Really Turning Into A "Global Village."

What kind of a century will this new century be? What will be the characteristics of the Global World?

It is possible to make virtual journeys via infinite information highways to the most remote places of the world; accordingly, a massive change has taken place in all the fields from economics to politics, from culture to science.

infinite = sonsuz... information highway = "bilgi otoyolu"... remote /ri-MOUT/ = çok uzak, kuş uçmaz kervan geçmez, ücra...

virtual = işte Türkçe'de "sanal" sözcüğü ile karşılanan sözcük!... Asıl anlamı, "gerçeğe yakın, hemen hemen gerçek"... Nitekim, "virtually" türevi "almost" ile eşanlamlıdır ve çok sık kullanılan bu sözcük Türkçe'ye "neredeyse, hemen hemen, %99.9 oranında" şeklinde çevrilir... Uzun sözün kısası, "virtual" ve "sanal" kavramları arasında farklılık var. Nitekim, sözlüklerimizde "virtual" karşılığında taban tabana zıt iki tanım veriliyor: "gerçek kuvvetinde olan"; "gerçek olmayan"... Yeni elektronik dünyamıza kimin yanılgılı tanı koyduğu takdiri sizlerin... [İnsanımız gerçekleri sanallardan gerçekten ayırt edebiliyor olsaydı, herşeyin bu derece sanal olduğu bir ülkede yaşıyor olmazdık.]

thanks to = sayesinde; iyi ki var... dimension = boyut... striking = çarpıcı, dikkate değer...

the turn of the century = yüzyılın başı... "Close down the Patents department" = "Patentler Gn. Md.lüğünü kapatınız"... since then = o günden bu güne...

Robert Millikan, the Nobel Prize Winner in Physics in 1923, cut it short by saying: "Man has no possibility of making use of the power of the atom." We all know what has happened since then. Taking into consideration these examples, one could easily conjecture that the enormous developments in science and technology will continue.

cut it short = "uzun sözü kısa etti", lafı uzatmadan söyledi, kestirmeden söyledi... to conjecture = to guess = tahmin etmek...

The invention of new vaccines in the field of medicine and transplantations, the profound improvements in genetics, the increase in the average life span, new inventions concerning the human brain will continue and humanity will come across many good news.

vaccine /vık-Sİ:N/ = aşı (medikal)... profound = derinlerde, kökü derinlere giden, deruni -- çoğu zaman burada olduğu gibi, "çok büyük, çok etkileyici, büyük çapta" gibi anlamlarla bir pekiştirici olarak karşımıza çıkabilir... life span = ömür... average life span = ortalama ömür... (Açıklaması: to span, fiili "X noktasından Y noktasına kadar kapsamak" gibi bir anlam taşır)... concerning = konusunda, ilişkin olarak...

Democracy will continue to spread and to strengthen on a global level.

to strengthen = kuvvetlendirmek, güçlendirmek ("strong" dan çağrıştırınız)... Buradaki gibi geçişsiz fiil niteliğiyle kullanılması seyrektir.

New codes of conduct and values will appear in every area from economics to politics, from culture to education.

code of conduct = davranış kuralları, adab-ı muaşeret... code of values = değerler "manzumesi"...

The state will be rebuilt according to the needs of the century, thereby gaining a structure that allows it to enact at a level closest to its citizens.

to rebuild - rebuilt - rebuilt = yeniden inşa etmek... thereby = bu yoldan, bu şekilde... to enact = (burada) davranmak [devletin işlevlerini yerine getirişi kastediliyor]... Genelde "harekete geçmek veya geçirmek, yapmak, ifa etmek" gibi bir anlam verebilir. En iyisi, her Karşılaştığınızda, bağlamdan gelen kavrama göre değerlendiriniz.

The power and the activity of the civil society will also increase giving a new dimensions to participation. There will be a transition from representative to participatory democracy.

representative = temsili, temsilci... participatory = katılımcı...

Electronic working environment will turn the world into a single market that operates for 24 hours, the concepts of time and place will lose their meaning, and firms of all sizes will be able to do business on a global level.

What matters will no longer be the origin of the firms, but rather where they produce thereby providing employment and welfare.

"Önemli olan artık şirketlerin hangi ülke menşeli (kaynaklı, çıkışlı) oldukları değil, nerede üretim yaptıkları ve bu şekilde (nereye) istihdam ve refah sağladıkları olacaktır..."
